Dr. Brian Postl

After earning a degree in medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1976, Dr. Brian Postl embarked on a highly decorated career until his retirement in 2022. Dr. Postl advocates for equitable health care for Indigenous communities and has championed equity, diversity, and inclusion across the Max Rady College of Medicine faculty. He has led medical school admissions criteria changes to create a student body that reflects Manitoba’s diverse population.

In 1999 Dr. Postl was the founding president and CEO of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, a position he held for 11 years. His other leadership roles included chair of Research Manitoba and federal advisor on health care wait times. He was inducted as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2011, invested in the Order of Manitoba in 2012, and appointed to the Order of Canada in 2020 for his advancement of clinical and academic health care in the province where he spent his entire career. As a researcher, Dr. Postl focused on Indigenous and circumpolar health, documenting health inequities in the North.

Dr. Postl has been able to address health inequities and work toward providing care to all communities—especially our most vulnerable populations, at all levels of the health care system and across their life spans

 

Honorary Membership Award

Honorary Membership may be conferred upon individuals who are not family physicians in Canada. This honour recognizes physicians or members of the public who have made an outstanding contribution to the CFPC, the discipline of family medicine, the medical profession, or the health and well-being of the population in Canada and around the world.
