Awards

The Awards of Excellence recognize College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) members who in the past 24 months have made outstanding contributions in one or more of the following areas:

  • Patient care
  • Community service
  • Hospital or health care institutions
  • College activities (nationally or through a Chapter)
  • Teaching
  • Research
  • Other elements of the academic discipline of family medicine

Examples of outstanding contributions include:

  • Conducting charitable or humanitarian work
  • Teaching
  • Embodying excellence in clinical practice
  • Creating an innovative research program
  • Providing leadership during a community outbreak of infectious disease
  • Establishing a training program in family violence
  • Developing a new program to address a health care need
  • Providing leadership in a hospital or regional health care program
  • Developing health care programs in specific areas (e.g., palliative care)

Eligibility criteria:

Each nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year.

The contributions being recognized must have occurred in the past two years.

Each Chapter may have its own eligibility criteria.

Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Selection process:

Nominations are invited from CFPC members and the public. Nominations are to be submitted to the office of the provincial Chapter of which the nominee is a member. Deadlines for submission vary by Chapter. Please contact the provincial Chapter of your nominee to confirm the annual deadline date.

Dr. Francine Lemire, recipient of the Calvin L. Gutkin Medicine Ambassador Award

Dr. Francine Lemire, FMF 2023, Montreal

The Calvin L. Gutkin Family Medicine Ambassador Award is named in honour of Dr. Cal Gutkin, who served as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) from 1996 to 2012 and whose work was instrumental in advancing family medicine in our country and supporting the development of family medicine on the global stage.

The award recognizes a dynamic leader in Canadian family medicine who is distinguished by their vision, innovation, strong communication skills, and effective relationship building with national and international organizations and working groups that support and positively influence the ever-changing role of the family physician and family medicine in Canada.

The Calvin L. Gutkin Family Medicine Ambassador Award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipient will receive complimentary access to the FMF (please note the complimentary registration does not cover the cost of any of the FMF sessions). In addition, the Calvin L. Gutkin Family Medicine Ambassador Award may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF. The total value of this award is up to $5,000 to support travel and expenses for your presentations across Canada (including the $1,500 reimbursement for FMF expenses).

Eligibility criteria:

Recipients must be Active, Senior, or Retired members of the CFPC who are in good standing.

Recipients must be dynamic speakers and communicators.

Individuals must demonstrate professional commitment and leadership that help strengthen the quality of family medicine in Canada through dedicated initiatives and outreach or partnerships with individuals and/or organizations that share this common goal.

Nominees must exhibit a strong commitment to enhancing the understanding and value of the role that family physicians in Canada fulfill as advocates for the advancement and sustainability of health care in our country.

A nominee is not eligible if they have received this award in the past three years.

The Major Awards Committee will identify the recipient of this award.

The recipient will be notified of the results formally in July.

The award will be offered annually. If no suitable member is identified in a specific year, the award will not be presented that year.

Dr. Molly Whalen-Browne, FMF 2023, Montreal

The Early Career Development Awards recognize the efforts of new family physician leaders of tomorrow for their outstanding contributions today. Nominees for these awards must be College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) members who have been in active practice for five years or less. Nominees should exemplify leadership, innovation, initiative, and dedication in one or more of the following areas:

  • Acting as a role model for learners and colleagues
  • Conducting outstanding scholarly activities in family medicine
  • Being involved in important health care projects or initiatives at the community level
  • Providing leadership in a hospital committee or project
  • Being involved in Chapter and/or national College activities

The CFPC Early Career Development Awards will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipients will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the CFPC Early Career Development Awards may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF* and up to $1,250 towards professional development or capacity building training.

Each nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year.

The CFPC Membership Advisory Committee will recommend the recipients of these awards to the national Honours and Awards Committee.

  • Your nomination will be evaluated based on the information provided regarding the following areas:
    • Patient care (family medicine expertise, clinical skills, communication, patient-centred care)
    • Citizenship (collaboration, contributions to community/society)
    • Teaching and education (undergraduate students, residents, fellows, continuing professional development, public education)
    • Scholarship (scientific discovery, innovation, translation of knowledge to practice)
    • Leadership and administration (medical or nonmedical organizations)

Recognition of support:

The CFPC/CPA Collaborative Mental Health Care Awards highlight important work being done in many communities in Canada to improve access to effective mental health care, enhance mental health service delivery, and increase family physicians’ capacity to identify and meet the mental health care needs of their patients. One award recognizes a grassroots community program or service providing access to mental health care in a primary care setting that involves excellence in interprofessional, team-based collaboration between family physicians and mental health services/providers. A second award recognizes a larger, institutionally supported program or service providing access to mental health care in a primary care setting that involves interprofessional team-based collaboration, as described above.

Eligibility criteria:

Any program providing access to mental health care in a primary care setting that involves interprofessional planning, collaboration, and service delivery is eligible.

At least one individual on the team must be a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) who has been in good standing for at least one year.

Self-nominations are eligible.

Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Nominations for the CFPC/CPA Collaborative Mental Health Care Awards are invited from CFPC members, Chapters, mental health care professionals, and the public.

The Collaborative Working Group on Shared Mental Health Care will recommend the recipient of this award to the national Honours and Awards Committee.

Nominees will be notified of the results by email in March.

The CFPC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program Award recognizes a Mainpro+® certified educational program that has provided an exceptional learning experience to either practising or practice-eligible members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). The award will be presented to the individual or group responsible for the design, development, and implementation of the winning CPD program.

Eligibility criteria:

The CFPC Mainpro+ certified CPD program must be shown to have provided an exceptional learning experience as measured by program evaluations completed by participating CFPC members.

The program must meet the CFPC definition of an exceptional learning experience, which means it satisfies one or more of the following criteria:

    • The program has been evaluated by CFPC members and determined to be of great value to the practice of family medicine
    • The program addresses a new CPD topic or area of interest for family physicians and is important and relevant to the practice of family medicine
    • The program successfully implemented an innovative learning tool and/or instructional model or approach, or incorporated an existing tool or instructional approach in an innovative manner

The program must be Mainpro+ certified on a national or provincial level at the time of nomination.

The program must be offered at least once prior to judging.

The program must have been certified and delivered at least once within the last two years.

Not eligible:

Programs that have won this award in the past five years are not eligible.

Residency training programs and programs aimed at pre-licensure family physicians are not eligible.  

Selection process:

The CFPC’s National Committee on Continuing Professional Development will review and rank eligible programs. Post-program evaluations, completed by physicians who have participated in the program, will be used to help determine the overall score of the program.

The results will be forwarded to the national Honours and Awards Committee for final approval. 

Nominees will be notified of the results formally in July.

Nominations are invited from CFPC members in good standing who have done any of the following:

    • Registered and participated in the nominated CPD program
    • Participated actively in the development and/or delivery of the nominated CPD program
    • Acted as the CFPC Mainpro+ reviewer for the nominated CPD program

Dr. Kannin Osei-Tutu, the recipient of the Donald I. Rice Award

Dr. Kannin Osei-Tutu, FMF 2022, Toronto

The Donald I. Rice Award is named in memory of Dr. Donald I. Rice, Executive Director of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) from 1965 to 1985. This award recognizes an outstanding CFPC family physician member for their contributions to teaching and leadership in the discipline of family medicine.

Eligibility criteria:

The nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year and has made an outstanding contribution to teaching and leadership in the discipline of family medicine.

Nominees are not eligible if they have received this award in the past three years.

The terms of this award cover a two-year period; a new recipient is identified every even-numbered year.

Taxable income:

Award funds received are taxable and are considered part of your personal income in the fiscal year in which they are received. The Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) will issue a statement of income (T4A information slip) at the end of the year for these amounts. Dr. Dee Mangin, recipient of the Family Medicine Researcher of the Year award

The Family Medicine Researcher of the Year Award recognizes a College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) member who has made original contributions to research and knowledge building in family medicine in Canada. The contribution may encompass any aspect of family medicine research, from clinical to health services to education. This award honours a researcher who has been a pivotal force in the definition, development, and dissemination of concepts central to the discipline of family medicine. The CFPC will be pleased to cover the cost of your registration for FMF 2024. In addition, the Family Medicine Researcher of the Year may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

The nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year. The nominee can be either community or academic based.

The nominee cannot have received this award in the past three years.

The 2023 Family Physicians of the Year - Territories Dr. Stephanie Buchanan  

 

Family Physicians of the Year – Territories Dr. Stephanie Buchanan, FMF 2023, Montreal

The Family Physician of the Year awards, named in honour of Dr. Reg L. Perkin, Executive Director of the College of Family Physicians of Canada™ (CFPC) from 1985 to 1996, recognize outstanding CFPC family physician members who exemplify what it means to be a family doctor: providing exceptional care to patients and contributing to the health and well-being of their communities. These awards are based on peer nominations, with all CFPC members welcome to submit nominations for their fellow family physicians who meet eligibility.

The value of the Family Physician of the Year award is up to $1,500 for provincial recipients, and up to $5,000 for the recipient from the Territories, to support travel to Family Medicine Forum (FMF). Additionally, the CFPC will be pleased to cover the cost of your registration for FMF 2024. Please note the complimentary registration does not cover the cost of any of the FMF sessions.

Eligibility criteria:

Each nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year and is a skilled clinician.

Candidates may be recognized for providing exceptional care to their patients and making meaningful contributions to the health and well-being of their communities.

Candidates may be recognized for their dedication as researchers and educators of future generations of family doctors.

Each nominee must be community based and act as a resource to a practice population.

Candidates must recognize the central importance of the doctor-patient relationship.

All CFPC members are invited to submit nominations for Canada’s Family Physicians of the Year. Health care colleagues, community leaders, and patients are encouraged to submit letters of support for these nominations.

Each of the CFPC’s provincial Chapters will select a Family Physician of the Year. Please contact the provincial Chapter of your nominee to confirm the 2024 deadline date.

Nominations for Family Physician of the Year Award for the Territories must reach the CFPC National Office by 4:00 p.m. (ET) on April 1, 2024.

A complete nomination will include responses to the following:

  1. How does the nominee demonstrate outstanding leadership in areas of advocacy, community service, and/or education?
  2. Explain how the nominee supports excellence in family medicine, including community medical services and contributions beyond their medical practice to the community at large.
  3. How does the nominee exemplify the Four Principles of Family Medicine:
    1. The family physician is a skilled clinician.
    2. Family medicine is a community-based discipline.
    3. The family physician is a resource to a defined practice population.
    4. The patient-physician relationship is central to the role of the family physician.
  4. Explain why this nominee deserves the Family Physician of the Year honour.

Although not mandatory, the following elements are strongly encouraged in the submission of a nomination package (max. 10 documents):

  • A recent resume
  • Patient testimonials
  • Additional letters of support from peers, community organizations or groups, health professionals/administrators, etc.

Honorary Membership in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) may be conferred upon individuals who are not family physicians in Canada. This honour recognizes other physicians or members of the public who have made outstanding contributions to the CFPC, the discipline of family medicine, the medical profession, or the health and well-being of the population in Canada and/or globally. The CFPC will be pleased to cover the cost of your registration for FMF 2024. In addition, the Honorary Membership may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

Nominees must be individuals of distinction who are not family physicians in Canada and have made outstanding contributions to the CFPC, the discipline of family medicine, the health system, or the health and well-being of the population in Canada or abroad.

Nominees must be non-members of the College, except those who are Associate or Affiliate Specialist members of the College.

Dr. Lisa Graves, recipient of the Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education Award

The Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education Award is named in memory of Dr. Ian McWhinney, the first professor and chair of a Canadian university department of family medicine (from 1968 to 1987 at the University of Western Ontario, now Western University). The award honours excellence in family medicine education and is presented to a teacher deemed by their peers to have made a unique and innovative contribution that has had a substantial national impact on the development of family medicine education in Canada. This contribution may encompass any level or aspect of family medicine education, such as:

  • Continuing professional development
  • Teaching
  • Curriculum development
  • Scholarship
  • Administration

Dr. Guy Béland, recipient of the Jean-Pierre Despins Award

The Jean-Pierre Despins Award is named in memory of Dr. Jean-Pierre Despins, who served as the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) President in 1995/96 and Chair of the Board of the CFPC’s Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM; formerly the Research and Education Foundation) from 1999 to 2000. This award honours a family physician CFPC member identified as an outstanding advocate and public spokesperson for family medicine, family physicians, and their patients. The CFPC will be pleased to cover the cost of your registration for FMF 2024. In addition, the Jean-Pierre Despins Award may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

The nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year and has made presentations on family practice issues to the public and/or other audiences.

The nominee must demonstrate many of the qualities that defined and were greatly valued by Dr. Despins, including statesmanship, leadership, diplomacy, courage of conviction, sense of humour, compassion, and consideration of others.

The nominee is not eligible if they have received this award in the past three years.

The CFPC Lifetime Achievement Awards in Family Medicine Research honour individuals who were trailblazers and leaders in family medicine research and made substantial contributions to family medicine research during their active career years. These awards give public recognition to their work and to the discipline of family medicine.

The CFPC Lifetime Achievement Awards in Family Medicine Research will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at FMF. In addition, the CFPC Lifetime Achievement Awards in Family Medicine Research may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

Nominees must no longer be doing full-time academic work.

Posthumous nominations will be accepted.

Associate members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) may be nominated.

The Mimi Divinsky Award for History and Narrative in Family Medicine recognizes the best submitted narrative account of experiences in family medicine. The award is named in memory of Dr. Mimi Divinsky for her role as a pioneer in narrative medicine in Canada. The Mimi Divinsky Award for History and Narrative in Family Medicine will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the Mimi Divinsky Award for History and Narrative in Family Medicine may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

The award is open to College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) members who are in good standing, family medicine residents, or medical students.

The story must be original and not previously published to be considered.

The author must own the copyright to the submitted work. In Canada, authors automatically own the copyright to their works, so unless you have assigned the copyright to another person or publisher your story is eligible. Submitted stories are licensed under a Creative Commons licence, which means authors retain the copyright to their stories and others have limited copying and distribution rights provided the authors are credited.

Stories must be 1,200 words or less in length and may be submitted in English or French.

Only one story per author will be considered each year.

Applicants are not eligible if they have received this award in the past three years.

Dr Warren McIsaac, CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award

The CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award recognizes the best research article published in a national or international journal during the preceding year based on original family medicine research carried out by a College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) member. The CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

At least one member of the research team must be a CFPC member, either as the principal investigator or a key member of the research team, who has been in good standing for at least one year.

The research must be relevant to family medicine.

Only the final version of a published article is eligible and it must be submitted for the year in which the final version was published.

Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Dr Robert Primavesi, recipient of the Jim Ruderman Family Medicine Education Leadership Award

 

Dr. Robert Primavesi

The Jim Ruderman Family Medicine Education Leadership Award is named in honour of Dr. Jim Ruderman, who was Chief of Family Medicine at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, from 1992 to 2014. The award recognizes an outstanding Canadian family physician who embodies those qualities that made its namesake such an outstanding leader— excellent role model, inspires others to work collaboratively, promotes a work environment that is respectful, collegial and supportive, effective delegation, self-awareness and humility.. It recognizes a teacher of family medicine – either community-based or university-based – whose unique and innovative contribution has had a significant local or regional impact. The Jim Ruderman Family Medicine Education Leadership Award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the Jim Ruderman Family Medicine Education Leadership Award may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

Each nominee must be a College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) member who has been in good standing for at least one year.

Candidates must have demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills in family medicine teaching.

Nominees must have demonstrated the qualities that defined and were valued by Dr. Ruderman: wisdom, equanimity, compassion, and mentorship.

Nominees are not eligible if they have received this award in the past three years.

The W. Victor Johnston Award honours the late Dr. W. Victor Johnston, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)’s first Executive Director (1954 to 1964). This award recognizes a renowned Canadian or international family medicine leader for continuous and enduring contributions to the specialty of family medicine in Canada or abroad. The CFPC will be pleased to cover the cost of your registration for FMF 2024. In addition, the W. Dr. Brooke Cochrane, FMF 2023

The Indigenous Family Medicine Resident Scholarship recognizes a top First Nations, Metis, or Inuit family medicine resident in Canada who has shown leadership and commitment to a career in family medicine.

The value of the Indigenous Family Medicine Resident Scholarship is $10,000. The award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024 The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the Indigenous Family Medicine Resident Scholarship may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

Nominees must be senior family medicine residents in their second year at the time of nomination.

Nominees must show an interest in enhancing their leadership skills within organized medicine.

Nominees are eligible if they have one or more achievements in the following areas:

  • Leadership activities during residency/leadership qualities (beyond departmental and program activities, such as participation in organized family medicine, the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s Section of Residents, or Resident Doctors of Canada)
  • Academic achievements related to family medicine (e.g., publications)
  • Research achievements
  • Oral presentation skills (articulate and confident when presenting to large groups)
  • Unique achievements or exceptional activities in medical school or residency
  • Service to vulnerable populations, such as rural, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, addiction/mental health, inner city, etc.

The award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024 The recipients will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the Family Medicine Resident Scholarship may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

The Family Medicine Resident Awards for Scholarly Achievement recognize outstanding academic accomplishments by family medicine residents (in their first, second, or third year). These awards are intended to stimulate family medicine research and innovation in education. One recipient or team from each faculty of family medicine across Canada will be selected.

In addition to these awards, all nominations submitted on behalf of francophone family medicine residents will be forwarded to the Awards Committee of the Quebec College of Family Physicians to be considered for the 2024 Nadine St-Pierre Award, which recognizes the best scholarly work of a francophone family medicine resident in Canada. To qualify for the Nadine St-Pierre Award the nomination must include a full manuscript in French describing the scholarly work and a reflection piece by the author.

The recipients will be featured at the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024 during the Section of Researchers Awards Celebration. Additionally, we will publish the names of the 2024 honourees on our website.

Eligibility criteria:

Family medicine residents in their first, second, or third year of training are eligible.

The Val Rachlis Leadership in Family Medicine Award was presented in 2020 for the first time. This award is generously supported by Dr. Val Rachlis as a part of the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine’s Honours and Awards Program. This award recognizes a family medicine resident who has demonstrated outstanding academic, research, and communication leadership, and who is recognized as a future leader in our discipline.

The value of the Val Rachlis Leadership in Family Medicine Award is $1,500.

Selection process:

Top scored recipient of Indigneous Family Medicine Resident Scholarship, and all from Family Medicine Resident Scholarship, make up the pool of nominations for Val Rachlis Award. The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)’s Honours and Awards Committee will approve the recipient of this award and inform the recipient formally.

Dr. Noémie Frenette, FMF 2023

In addition to the recipients of the Family Medicine Resident Awards for Scholarly Achievement, all award nominations submitted on behalf of francophone family medicine residents will be forwarded to the Awards Committee of the Quebec College of Family Physicians (QCFP) for the selection of the Nadine St-Pierre Award, which focuses on the best scholarly work by an outstanding francophone family medicine resident in Canada.

The award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The value of the Nadine St-Pierre Award is $1,000. Additionally, the recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

Selected from the Family Medicine Resident Awards for Scholarly Achievement submissions. Recognizes the best scholarly work of a francophone family medicine resident in Canada. To qualify for the Nadine St-Pierre Award the nomination must include a full manuscript in French describing the scholarly work and a reflection piece by the author.  This award is available to family medicine residents in their first, second, or third year of training.

Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.
