2015_HM_Sandra-Banner_photoAs Executive Director and CEO of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) for nearly 30 years (1986 to June 2015), Sandra Banner made it her goal and passion to participate in and understand all aspects of medical education in Canada. During her tenure, Ms. Banner led the transformative process that took the CaRMS match from a paper-based process to an internet-supported electronic application, selection, and matching service. While concentrating and expanding the primary services of CaRMS, she made the CEO of CaRMS a pivotal position in medical education with involvement in a wide range of medical education activities.

This involvement allowed Ms. Banner to develop initiatives that resulted in valuable insights for the College of Family Physicians of Canada. She also worked with the departments of the College on researching the motivations for choosing a career in family medicine. The CaRMS post-match survey, initiated in 1994, has been tracking medical graduates for over 20 years, capturing influences and trend data that have been used to support and contribute to the initiatives of the College. Ongoing projects include research into the impact of the distributed medical campus and the longitudinal clerkship on career selection of Canadian medical graduates. Now CaRM’s CEO Emerita, Ms. Banner continues her role as an observer and contributor to the three national accreditation committees in Canada.
