The CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award recognizes the best research article published in a national or international journal during the preceding year based on original family medicine research carried out by a College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) member. The CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.* *Please note that while pandemic restrictions are imposed, we might defer this portion of the award.
Eligibility criteria:
At least one member of the research team must be a CFPC member, either as the principal investigator or a key member of the research team, who has been in good standing for at least one year.
The research must be relevant to family medicine.
Only the final version of a published article is eligible and it must be submitted for the year in which the final version was published.
Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Selection Process:
The CFPC Section of Researchers Selection Committee will recommend the recipient of this award to the national Honours and Awards Committee. Nominees will be notified of the results in July.

The Research Awards for Family Medicine Residents recognize family medicine residents in their first or second year of training for excellent research carried out and completed prior to June 1, 2024.
The Research Awards for Family Medicine Residents will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. Family medicine residents who have completed a research project in 2024 are eligible.
Residents in a third-year training program are not eligible.

The chair and research directors of each family medicine residency program will identify the most outstanding research project conducted by a resident or team of residents in their program in 2023 Only one nomination per university will be accepted.
The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)’s Section of Researchers will evaluate the nominations and recommend the recipients of these awards to the national Honours and Awards Committee. There are two awards available.
The recipients and research directors will be notified of the results formally in August.
Recognition of support:
This is a program of the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine, through the generosity of its donors.
- Janus Research Grants for intermediate-level or experienced researchers (maximum value $15,000)
- Janus Research Grants for novice or intermediate-level researchers (maximum value $7,500)
The Janus Grants support innovative programs and projects based on the four principles of family medicine:
- The family physician must be a skilled clinician
- The doctor-patient relationship is central to the role of the family physician
- Family medicine is a community-based discipline
- The family physician is a resource to a defined practice population
Eligibility criteria:
The primary investigator must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year.
The project must have started between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024.
Systematic review with a valid analysis (meta-analysis) or other valid rigorous analysis.
The project’s maximum budget cannot exceed $25,000.

Resident or medical student research projects and projects submitted on behalf of residents or students are not eligible. Members are not eligible if they have received this grant in the past three years.
Various family medicine research activities are eligible for these grants, including:

- Practice-based research projects
- Observational studies/surveys
- Program development and evaluation
- Educational research
- Cohort studies
- Meta-analyses
- Secondary data analyses
- Randomized controlled trials
- Research projects using the Janus Project’s National Physician Survey (NPS) database; all questions asked, as well as data tables and reports, are accessible on the NPS website
Selection process:
The selection committee of the Honours & Awards Research Committee (HARC) will recommend the recipients of these grants to the national Honours and Awards Committee.
Applicants will be notified of the results formally in July.
Taxable income:
Payments will be made in the name of the principal investigator unless indicated on the application, that they are to be redirected to a registered charity.
Award funds received are taxable and are considered part of your personal income in the fiscal year in which they are received. The Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) will issue a statement of income (T4A information slip) at the end of the year for these amounts. We recommend that you obtain professional advice from your financial/tax adviser regarding the income tax implications of this award.
It is recommended that recipients of the FAFM Honours & Awards Program enter into an agreement with an institution so that it can hold and disburse grant funds to avoid personal taxes. The Foundation’s values and accountability to donors require that no administrative fees can be claimed in a project budget or taken by the institution holding the grant funds. The FAFM will entrust grant funds to the chosen organization once the charitable registration number or the business GST number is received.
