goertzenDr. James Goertzen is the 2013 recipient of the Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education Award. This award recognizes an outstanding teacher of family medicine deemed by their peers to have made a unique and innovative contribution that has had a significant national impact on the development of family medicine education in Canada.

Dr. Goertzen has been a leader in family medicine education for the last 25 years and has presented locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally in the undergraduate, postgraduate, and faculty development settings. He has been awarded fellowship by both the CFPC and the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada. His educational interests include procedural teaching, challenging learners, problem preceptors, teaching professionalism, fostering the teaching skills of both students and residents, patients with borderline personality disorder, difficult patients, clinical obstetrics, collaborative care, and the patient-centred model.

Dr. Goertzen is Professor of Family Medicine and Medical Director for Faculty Development at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Sudbury. He has previously directed rural postgraduate family medicine programs in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

Currently, Dr. Goertzen practises family medicine with the Fort William Family Health Team. Within this collaborative health care setting, his patient care activities include minor procedures, hospital inpatient care, intrapartum obstetrics, long-term care, and palliative care.

 

Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education Award

 
This award is named in memory of Dr. Ian McWhinney, the first professor and chair of a department of family medicine at a Canadian university (Western University, 1968–1987). The award is supported by the CFPC, the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine, and the Ian McWhinney Endowment Fund.

The award honours excellence in family medicine education and is presented to a teacher of family medicine deemed by their peers to have made a unique and innovative contribution that significantly impacts the development of family medicine education in Canada.

This contribution may encompass any level or aspect of family medicine education, including but not limited to:

  • Continued medical education
  • Teaching
  • Curriculum development
  • Scholarship
  • Administration
