Having worked in family medicine for more than 34 years, Dr. Douglas Myhre strongly believes it is relational continuity that defines family medicine. After providing full-scope family medicine in Lethbridge, Alberta, Dr. Myhre relocated to Calgary, where he currently runs five clinics per week. Both residents and undergrads attend his clinics, and he brings the grounding and common sense of a community-based physician to the academic setting.
Dr. Myhre graduated from medicine at the University of Alberta and completed his CCFP through Dalhousie University. In his day-to-day work, Dr. Myhre collaboratively designs, implements, and evaluates programs aimed at redressing health care inequities in rural and remote Alberta.
Dr. Myhre actively publishes in the area of medical education; his most recent articles appeared in Canadian Family Physician and the Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine. His research focuses on longitudinal clinical experiences, with a particular interest in the response of admissions committees to social accountability.
For Dr. Myhre, the best part of his job is having ongoing relationships with patients and learners. Watching patients grow through their life stages and keeping in touch with colleagues whom he has taught and who have taught him are the most rewarding aspects of his career.
Donald I. Rice Award
This award is named in memory of Dr. Donald I. Rice, Executive Director of the CFPC from 1965 to 1985. The award recognizes outstanding family physician members of the College for their contributions to teaching, for their vision, and for their leadership in the discipline of family medicine.
