Donald I. Rice Award

The Donald I. Rice Award is named in memory of Dr. Donald I. Rice, Executive Director of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) from 1965 to 1985. This award recognizes an outstanding CFPC family physician for contributions to teaching and leadership in the discipline of family medicine.

The value of this award is up to $6,300 to support travel and expenses for presentations across Canada. The award may be presented during Family Medicine Forum (FMF). The recipient will receive complimentary four-day registration to FMF. In addition, the recipient may receive up to $2,000 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

Each nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year and has made an outstanding contribution to teaching and leadership in the discipline of family medicine.

Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Taxable income:

Award funds received are taxable and considered part of your personal income in the fiscal year in which they are received. The CFPC will issue a statement of income (T4A information slip) at the end of the year for these amounts.

Nominations are due to the CFPC National Office by 4:00 p.m. (ET) on April 13, 2026.

Selection process:

CFPC members, Chapters, and the public are invited to submit nominations for those meeting the criteria.

The joint CFPC and the FAFM Honours and Awards Committee uses peer endorsements from a national review process to compile their recommendations to be approved by the CFPC and FAFM Boards of Directors.  

Nominees will be formally notified of results in August.
