Bruce Halliday Award for Care of the Disabled

The Bruce Halliday Award for Care of the Disabled is named in memory of Dr. Bruce Halliday, a past president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP), a Member of Parliament for 20 years, and an advocate for the care of people living with a disability in Canada.

This award recognizes the achievements of a CFPC family physician member in good standing who is making an exceptional contribution to the welfare of the disabled in their community through practise, teaching, research, or advocacy.

Examples of outstanding contributions include:

  • Developing education about disability for undergraduate medical students, family medicine residents, or practising family physicians
  • Conducting research that enhances the care of people with disabilities
  • Demonstrating outstanding practice skills in caring for people with disabilities
  • Serving as a role model for learners and colleagues
  • Acting as an exceptional advocate for people with disabilities to make sure they have access to the best primary health care available

The award may be presented during Family Medicine Forum (FMF). The recipient will be reimbursed up to $2,000 to help offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF, complimentary FMF registration for one day, and up to $2,000 toward professional development or capacity building training.

Eligibility criteria:

Each nominee must be a CFPC member who has been in good standing for at least one year.

Self-nominations are eligible.

Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Nominations are due to the CFPC National Office by 4:00 p.m. (ET) on April 13, 2026.

Selection process:

The joint CFPC and the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) Honours and Awards Committee uses the peer endorsements from a national review process to compile their recommendations to be approved by the CFPC and FAFM Boards of Directors. 

Applicants will be formally notified of results in August.
